Anticipazioni settima stagione, spoiler by Craig Thomas

Alla fine della sesta stagione di How I Met Your Mother la storia si è arricchita di un nuovo mistero (Barney si sposa?!). Il produttore esecutivo Craig Thomas parla di quello e di tutte le novità che ci attendono nella settima stagione in un’intervista rilasciata a TvGuide.

Il matrimonio di Barney
Barney si sposa! Non è il matrimonio più facile, ma è epico, davvero epico. Nella season premiere rivedremo il matrimonio di Punchy e riprenderemo da dove avevamo interrotto: si comincia con il matrimonio di Barney nel futuro. Lui avrà la tremarella. Ted gli dirà: “Abbiamo già vissuto il matrimonio peggiore di tutti i tempi” … in questa stagione spiegherà come una persona che ha odiato da sempre l’idea del matrimonio è finito con lo sposarsi, mostreremo come Barney è arrivato a quel fatidico momento.

L’evoluzione di Barney
Abbiamo sempre saputo che la serie sarebbe stato uno show su come le persone cambiano e crescono … Barney è un grande personaggio di sicom, è un grande personaggio da scrivere perché può essere completo, è come un personaggio dei cartoni animati, che può essere pazzo nel suo mondo e la settimana dopo essere emotivamente a terra. Questa è la forza di Neil (Patrick Harris): lui può interpretare bene le due situazioni. Quindi penso che nel corso degli anni, più abbiamo scritto di Barney, più abbiamo visto che cosa era in grado di iniettare Neil in questo folle personaggio. Ci ha fatto venire voglia di scrivere di più sul viaggio di Barney e su come sarebbe potuto diventare.

La sposa di Barney (tra le possibilità più ovvie Robin e Nora)
Non posso dire quando sarà rivelata l’identità della sposa, ma la scopriremo già nella settima stagione … ci piace l’idea di costituire un gruppo di candidate diverse … ci saranno ulteriori novità sulla saga di Barney e Robin.

Gli amori di Robin
Rivedremo ancora il personaggio di Michael Trucco, ma non tanto quanto avremmo sperato. Quindi ci sarà un nuovo interesse amoroso per Robin, ma non posso dire ancora molto, perché stiamo lavorando su alcuni casting e pianificando la presenza con Michael.

La situazione sentimentale di Ted
Andremo a riempire alcuni spazi lasciati vuoti del suo puzzle. Il nuovo mistero, chi ha sposato Barney, ci permette di lavorare da una prospettiva nuova al mistero di Ted e di rivelare più particolari dalla nuova angolazione … Ted nella settima stagione, grazie al palazzo che sta costruendo a New York City, risulterà più attraente alle donne, e dovrà decidere quindi se approfittare della nuova situazione oppure se continuare a cercare la persona giusta per sistemarsi … alla fine della settima stagione lui e Barney si scambieranno i ruoli.

Lily e Marshall
Dopo aver passato alcuni momenti difficili vivranno un periodo estremamente felice. La gravidanza durerà una stagione televisiva. Ci sarà il parto a maggio, così avremo un anno per capire come affrontare la “maledizione del bambino”. Cerco di guardare il lato positivo: la gravidanza e un bambino ci darà la possibilità di creare nuove storie. Marshall all’inizio della settima stagione sarà ancora disoccupato. Ha appena saputo che sta per diventare padre, ma non ha un lavoro. Alla fine Marshall entrerà a far parte dello studio legale ambientale del personaggio di Martin Short. Per Marshall il nuovo lavoro sarà un sogno e Martin Short sarà il suo mentore, ma il suo capo è il peggior avvocato di tutti i tempi. Ci sarà un contenzioso e il capo creerà continuamente pasticci, così Marshall sarà combattuto se rimanere il protetto rispettoso o se cercare di assumersi delle responsabilità in più. Anni fa abbiamo fatto un piccolo flashforward in cui si vede Marshall che è diventato giudice. Così mentre andrà in tribunale incontrerà un giudice e lo vedremo impegnato nella strada per diventare giudice.

L’ottava stagione sarà l’ultima?
Tutti i nostri contratti finiscono con l’ottava stagione, quindi ci stiamo preparando all’idea che sia l’ultima stagione…. intanto sappiamo già come finirà la settima stagione: si svolgerà nel futuro durante il giorno del matrimonio e li accadrà qualcosa. E ci sarà anche la nascita del bambino che ci introdurrà poi all’ottava stagione.

Whoever thought Barney Stinson was the marrying kind? But more importantly — who is he marrying?

How I Met Your Mother's season finale opened up a whole new mystery while still evading the original one regarding the identity of the titular mother. But creator/executive producer Craig Thomas assures TVGuide.com that Season 7 will offer answers and even more changes for our beloved quintet. Robin gets a new love interest for one (hello, Kal Penn! Goodbye, Michael Trucco!), Marshall gets a new job, of course, and "Ted Mosby, Architect" will finally be a great pickup line. Martin Short to recur on How I Met Your Mother

So Barney (Neil Patrick Harris) does get married, right?
Craig Thomas: Barney does get married. It's not the smoothest wedding day, but it's epic — truly epic. In the premiere, we definitely pick up right where we left off. ... We also see Punchy's wedding in the premiere. We start at Barney's wedding in the future. He's having the jitters. Ted says, "We've already been to the worst wedding of all time" — Punchy's. And we flash back to September of 2011 when the gang finally goes to the long-talked-about Punchy wedding. We had the two weddings inform each other.

How did you decide it would be Barney getting married?
Thomas: Part of it was the story we told in Season 6. Barney reconnected with his father —finding out who his father is and hinting that there is more to Barney than a guy who puts on suits and hits on women to sleep with them. Our hope was that it would play as a surprise and I think it did. We haven't shown yet how he gets from Point A to Point B. That's Season 7 — how he gets to that church, puts on that tuxedo and ends up moments away from marrying somebody. We love the storytelling challenge of showing how this character is so notoriously and proudly single, who has always hated the notion of marriage, getting there.

Was Barney getting married part of the plan when you and Carter [Bays] conceived the show?
Thomas: Well, we always knew it would be a show about people changing and growing up. The whole show begins with people getting engaged and moving on in life. Barney's a great sitcom character. He's a great character to write because he can be a complete, insane cartoon character in his own world one week and in another week be emotionally grounded and you care about his journey. That's a testament to Neil. He can play both. So I think over the years, the more we wrote Barney, the more we saw what Neil could do and the heart and emotion he could inject into this insane character. It made us want to write more about Barney's journey and who he could become.

In Season 1 we did an episode about his backstory ["Game Night"] and who he was before he became Barney. We pitched it as "How He Became Darth Vader." He was this sweet, open-hearted hippie guy who got really burned by his college girlfriend and became Barney. We always look at him as a sort of superhero. He has the superhero outfit and he has this big mythological backstory. Any time we can peel back the layers to Barney, it's better.

When will his bride be revealed?
Thomas: I can't say exactly when it will happen, but we will learn the identity of the person in Season 7.

The obvious possibilities are Robin (Cobie Smulders) and Nora (Nazanin Boniadi). Will there be more candidates?
Thomas: There will be more women than that! We like the idea of setting up a bunch of different candidates. For fans of Barney and Robin, the premiere picks up with the look she gave Barney. A big theme is Robin dealing with the fact that she has feelings flickering for Barney. Any HIMYM fans who felt like there wasn't enough of Barney and Robin when they were dating, stay tuned for more to their saga.

Kal Penn ditching White House for HIMYM romance

A lot of fans hated that you guys broke them up so abruptly in Season 5.
Thomas: Yeah, there definitely was a faction of fans who were upset by it, but we knew we eventually would stir those flames back up. We knew it would take a while and we wouldn't do it right away, but here we are coming into Season 7. Robin's dealing with the fact that she has these feelings again, which makes no sense since they dated and it didn't work out. It's essentially an episode of love being crazy and mysterious, like most of our episodes are. She's trying to wrap her head around these feelings. No one else but her knows about them.

You said in May the plan was for her to have a big love story with Michael Trucco's character, but his show [Fairly Legal] was renewed, so how have you had to readjust?
Thomas: Yeah, we won't see as much of Michael Trucco as we had hoped. So there will be a new love interest for Robin, which I can't say too much about yet because we're still working out some casting and scheduling with Michael.

Let's move on to that other mystery.
Thomas: Oh, yes, that one! [Laughs] I can tell you we're going to fill in pieces of the puzzle now since we know Ted meets the mother at Barney's wedding. We sort of did that because ultimately, we like the idea of further complicating the mystery. And with the new mystery around that day — who is Barney marrying? — it allows us to work toward it from a new perspective and we'll be revealing more about it from that angle.

Where is Ted (Josh Radnor) now after he was thisclose to getting back together with Zoey?
Thomas: We've seen Ted go through a lot of turmoil over the years — getting dumped at the altar, the Arcadian drama with Zoey. But we'll see Ted on a bit of a hot streak in Season 7. He's a hotshot architect having his building built in New York City. He's realizing, 'Wait a second. I'm kind of a catch right now.' His stock is very high and he's dealing with the fact that he's very attractive to the ladies at the moment. He's struggling whether to take advantage of that or stay on track of trying to find the right person to settle down with. Is this the moment to work it a little bit? He's a little torn. ... So he and Barney are swapping places! [Laughs] By the end of Season 7, Ted will wear suits and Barney's hair will be spiky and messy.

Some fans are impatient about the mother reveal. Are you concerned about their reaction to Ted being back on the dating scene now?
Thomas: The way we look at the show is that if it's purely about answering that question, the show will be five seconds long. We love that larger question and we're now coming at it with this future perspective of this future wedding day. I don't worry too much about that question as long as we're telling interesting stories about these characters. During Season 6, I was far more interested in what Marshall was going through, losing his father. It's about writing about characters, trying to make people care about them. Our cast is fantastic and we feel lucky to write for them. Whether people are impatient, all I can hope is that people care about our characters.

I think everyone was thrilled when Lily (Alyson Hannigan) finally got pregnant.
Thomas: Yeah! It really felt like they earned some good news, didn't it? We're going to see them extremely happy after going through some really hard stuff. I felt like something good happened to good friends of mine.

How are you going to tackle the "baby curse"?
Thomas: The good news is the length of a pregnancy is about the length of a TV season. There will be a May birth. I guarantee you that. ... We know at some point they have a boy, but stay tuned to see what gender [this one] is! ... I guess we have a year to try to figure out how to tackle the dreaded baby curse. I try to look at the bright side. The pregnancy and a baby will open up more stories. And Marshall (Jason Segel) is still unemployed at the start of Season 7. He just learned he's going to be a father, but he doesn't have a job. We'll eventually see Marshall land at an environmental law firm with Martin Short.

This is different from the botched interview with Dave Foley in the finale, right?
Thomas: Yeah, we had toyed with Marshall getting that job ... but Dave's pilot got picked up and then we heard through the grapevine that Martin Short was a fan of the show, which thrilled us because we're huge fans of his. When the universe takes one funny Canadian comedy legend away with one hand, it gives you another with the other hand! ... But Marshall will be at his dream job and Martin Short is his mentor and he discovers that Martin Short is the worst lawyer of all time. They're involved in an ongoing case that goes to litigation. And Martin's character — this well-intentioned head of the firm — botches it up. So Marshall's going to be very torn about whether to remain the respectful protégé or try to take over a little bit. We'll see him be awesome at his job. We did a tiny flashforward years ago that reveals Marshall winds up as a judge. So through the course of him getting to a courtroom, meeting a judge, we see him on the path of becoming a judge. It's fun to be able to show the steps these characters get to take. We feel very lucky to get to do that with our show.

Are you still approaching Season 8 as the last one for now?
Thomas: All of our contracts are up after 8, so we're preparing for that to possibly be the end. As long as we know that a year from now, that's fine. But if we don't, then that's a problem! We know exactly the ending minute or two of Season 7. It's going to take place in the future at that wedding day and we're going to end Season 7 there. It's going to be something! And we'll also end with a baby being born and then head into 8. And maybe there'll be more.

Cosa ci aspetta dalla settima stagione di How I Met Your Mother? Carter Bays e Craig Thomas ce lo dicono nella solita intervista estiva: le anticipazioni succose le lasciamo a dopo il salto, per ora vi annunciamo un paio di guest star, Kal Penn (che ha abbandonato il lavoro alla Casa Bianca e sarà il nuovo interesse amoroso di Cobie Smulders) e Conan O’Brien (che il suo ruolo, pare volutamente secondario, l’ha vinto ad un’asta di beneficienza). E se non è ancora chiaro se rivedremo o meno Robin Sparkles, di certo questa sarà “la stagione di Robin”… attenzione agli spoiler!

Se la sesta stagione è stata quella della crescita, questa settima stagione di How I Met Your Mother “è la stagione della nascita e della rinascita – ha detto Carter Bays – quella del diventare qualcuno di nuovo, sarà tutto collegato all’eccitante nuovo viaggio di Lily e Marshall (Jason Segel)“. Secondo Craig Thomas, “questa stagione sarà quella in cui si guarda al futuro, i personaggi scrutano l’orizzonte del 2030 e si chiederanno cosa diventeranno. Lily e Marshall dovranno fare i conti con l’essere genitori, il loro avere un figlio porterà il gruppo ad una riflessione collettiva, Ted, Robin e Barney cominceranno a pensare ‘Avrò mai un figlio? Come e quando succederà? Cosa sarà del mio futuro? Con chi lo condividerò?“.

In questa stagione HIMYM entrerà nel suo terzo atto, una cosa che non mette pressione ai produttori, “anzi, è divertente – ha aggiunto Thomas – perché dovremo cominciare a rispondere a qualche domanda, a partire da quella ‘Con chi si sposa Barney?’, cui sicuramente risponderemo nella settima stagione, dove troveranno risposta anche indizi e piccole cose che abbiamo seminato nella prima e seconda stagione“.

La settima stagione della mamma comincerà da dove il season finale ci ha lasciato, quello sul matrimonio di Barney sarà IL mistero della stagione, “qualcuno ha convinto Barney (Neil Patrick Harris) a mettersi un fiore all’occhiello e a sposarsi, scopriremo chi sia quest’anno. Sin dall’inizio della settima stagione – ha spiegato Thomas a TVLine – scopriremo che Robin deve fare i conti con i suoi rinascenti sentimenti per Barney, che ha una relazione con Nora“.

Vedremo sin dalla season premiere che Barney darà la caccia a Nora, “sarà un nuovo Barney, è il primo passo nel nuovo sentiero di Barney, che dovrà faticare per riconquistare Nora“, dicono i due produttori, secondo cui il nostro damerino non sarà al corrente dei sentimenti di Robin per lui, di cui saranno a conoscenza solo Robin e Lily (Alyson Hannigan). “Barney ha deciso di intraprendere un percorso serio lontano da Robin, e questo la fa molto pensare. Cosa farà Robin? Gli permetterà di maturare, o gli si metterà tra i piedi? Per robin sarò un gran bel dilemma, Barney vuole crescere e lei vuole di nuovo Barney: tra i due – promettono i produttori – ci saranno un sacco di fuochi d’artificio durante gli sweeps di novembre“.

E quello che parte come un triangolo, secondo Bays e Thomas sarà ben presto destinato a trasformarsi in un pentagono o esagono, “sarà un po’ come Mamma Mia, e ci saranno diverse persone che Barney potrebbe sposare“. Ma anche Robin (Cobie Smulders) avrà un interesse amoroso, dopo aver lasciato Dr House per la Casa Bianca, Kal Penn torna a lavorare in tv, e in How I Met Your Mother sarà Kevin, il terapista di Robin.

La nostra sarà mandata da un giudice in terapia dopo essere rimasta coinvolta in una rissa: lei si innamorerà di Kevin e Kevin ricambierà, per quella che viene definita “una relazione proibita“. Il mistero della puntata in cui Kal Penn apparirà per la prima volta sarà sul chi abbia colpito Robin: “L’inizio di stagione sarà molto confuso per Robin, ma ci divertiremo moltissimo, questa sarà la stagione di Robin“, ha detto Thomas, mentre Bays ha aggiunto che “Robin crescerà più di qualsiasi altro personaggio, dovrà affrontare un suo viaggio, un po’ come ha fatto Marshall l’anno scorso“. Rivedremo inoltre Michael Trucco, ex fidanzato di Robin visto la scorsa stagione.

Ovviamente non mancherà la ricerca di Ted (Josh Radnor) relativa alla mamma, anche se par di capire, che Ted e Barney si scambieranno i ruoli: secondo Bays “Ted tornerà al suo obiettivo principale, trovare la donna giusta e formare una famiglia“, mentre Thomas spiega che il nostro “dovrà fare i conti con il fatto di essere una preda ambita, è il più giovane architetto a costruire qualcosa a New York, è anche un professore e soprattutto è single: sarà un dilemma morale tra il ‘voglio trovare la donna della mia vita’ e il ‘però ci sono ragazze che vogliono uscire con me’“.

Lily e Marshall saranno il catalizzatore di questa stagione (in cui la gravidanza verrà portata avanti praticamente in tempo reale), e scopriremo che il personaggio di Jason Segel rimarrà disoccupato per poco tempo: il nostro finirà a far parte di un potente studio legale che si occupa di ambiente, il cui titolare interpretato da Martin Short è un idolo per Marshall. Peccato che non è tutto oro quello che luccica, il personaggio di Short sarà infatti uno dei peggiori avvocati che Marshall abbia mai conosciuto e il nostro sarà combattuto tra il rispetto che prova per il suo idolo e la voglia di assumersi maggiori responsabilità. “Anni fa abbiamo mostrato che nel futuro Marshall diventerà giudice e questo percorso sarà approfondito“, ha spiegato Thomas a TV Guide.

E sempre a TVGuide, Thomas parla del fatto che l’ultima stagione di HIMYM potrebbe essere l’ultima: “I nostri contratti scadono tra due anni, ci stiamo preparando per la possibilità che sia la fine, l’importante è che l’eventuale certezza ci sia tra un anno. Intanto sappiamo come finirà la settima stagione, si svolgerà nel futuro durante il giorno del matrimonio e accadrà qualcosa. E ci sarà nascerà anche il bambino, nascita che ci condurrà all’ottava stagione“.
